So an update: I didn't manage to become chartered but decided this wasn't going to stop me - the last 5 years have been massively helpful in increasing my engineering knowledge and experience, and my ability to make things happen - it also turns out that in South America there's not much recognition of engineering qualifications now once you get beyond a degree - so on to the next stage!
Next week I start at Redcliffe College in Gloucester, on a Certificate in Intercultural Studies, called Professionals In Mission. It's specifically designed for people like me who want to use their profession at the same time as sharing God's good news. Oh and I'll also be studying AS level Spanish at the same time.
It's sad to have left Shrewsbury - I was there just over a year which was quite a long time for me to work and live in the same place. I'm leaving lots of good friends there, but am also very encouraged by the support of my church and by how many of my colleagues have been interested in my plans - thanks!
I'm starting to apply for various posts in South America - at the moment I'm looking at the forms for SIM, HCJB and Latin Link - all of which I've had some involvement with before, but this would be a longer-term role. I'm excited to see what God has in store over the next year and beyond - and will keep you posted.
